The Best Horror Games For Late Nights

Horror games are a major pillar of the video game industry. There is a large selection of different subgenres, including the classic survival horror with series like Resident Evil, action horror like Left or psychological horror, which includes the Silent Hill game series.

The wide range of horror games is based on media such as film or books, but thanks to its interactivity it offers a much greater arc of suspense that can hardly be achieved in any other medium.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

Hellblade is an atmospheric action game that doesn't look like a horror game at first glance. It was developed by Ninja Theory and launched in 2017. It immediately fascinated and terrified players with its profound story. The focus is on the protagonist Senua, who is controlled by different voices in her head. The Viking setting mixes with a real psychosis, which gives everyone goosebumps, especially due to the good sound design.

So the horror in Hellblade isn't about monsters or spooky environments, it comes straight from the characters themselves. The team worked with scientists and medical professionals to present Sena's clinical picture as authentically as possible, while respecting those affected. The game received a lot of praise from critics when it was released because it integrates this topic well into a video game. A sequel called Sena's Saga: Hellblade II has also been announced since 2019, but there is no direct release date for it yet.

Dead Space Remake

The original part of the Dead Space series was released in 2008 and was developed by EA. As Isaac Clarke, you wake up on an empty spaceship infested with monsters. The third-person shooter mainly relies on a grotesque environment and monsters that have it all. Something could be lurking around every corner and you never know what sound of the actually empty spaceship you have to listen to .In 2023, the long-awaited Dead Space Remake was finally released, refreshing the graphics and some subtleties of the now fifteen-year-old game.

However, the game principle remains the same and relies primarily on a gloomy atmosphere, a minimal HUD and the dismemberment of the monsters using the various weapon attachments that can be found in the game. Dead Space Remake is suitable for anyone who wants to play a good horror shooter.

Iron Lung

Iron Lung is a new indie horror game developed by just a guy named David Szymanski. In the game we are on an unknown planet with gray rocks and blood-red water. However, we are not walking the planet, we are trapped in a submarine deep under the sea .Hence the name, which is based on the medical device of the iron lung. The player's task is to navigate the submarine at the bottom of the sea and take pictures of the surroundings. The horror of the game is mainly due to the claustrophobic situation of the submarine.

Being trapped alone in an iron coffin is certainly not something for everyone, which the game underscores with its background noise and minimalist graphics. Added to this are the blurry images recorded by the submarine's camera. You never know what might be lurking outside for you, although you will never leave this small space. The game falls into the category of psychological horror. Iron Lung is one of those horror games that has taken the internet by storm and probably gives you a lot of nightmares despite its simple gameplay.

Slender Man

Slenderman is now a cult figure of internet horror. The slim and faceless man in a suit first appeared on the Something Awful internet forum, where he was created by Eric Knudsen. On June 10, 2009, Eric entered a spooky Photoshop image competition and added his character, Slenderman, to otherwise harmless images of children's playgrounds. Immediately, the idea spread like wildfire and Slenderman was quickly adopted by the creepypasta community.

In 2012, the first and probably the best-known offshoot of this story appeared in video game format. Slender: The Eight Pages sends you into the forest to find eight different pieces of paper with clues to Slenderman. These are getting harder and harder to find while the Slenderman is always breathing down your neck. The game was best known for its numerous Let's Plays on YouTube, which were just booming. Today it is considered a cult classic, but it is less spectacular than it was back then. Slenderman has also inspired a number of other horror games simply because of its popularity on YouTube. The last Slenderman to date came out in 2022. So far only in the demo, but you can download it without an account.

Encryption

Inscryption was developed by Daniel Mullins Games and was released in 2021. It is one of the most creative horror games and relies on a creepy combination of card game and escape room with some rogue-like elements. This mix of genres makes it quite unique, but no less creepy. Above all, Inscryption relies on a horror that is reminiscent of old fairy tale books, but with a dark twist.

Incidentally, the developer is also known for its two other horror games, Hex and Pony Island, both of which are also worth checking out.Inscryption is also sometimes misleading and you have to be constantly on your guard to choose the right cards. The mixture of strategy and horror is quite consistent and definitely worth a look.

Cry Of Fear

Cry of Fear is one of the Hidden Gems of horror games and is originally based on a mod for Half-Life. The indie development studio Team Painkiller had previously developed the title Afraid of Monsters and was already able to collect small successes in the modding  community. Cry of Fear then became even better known through various Let's Plays on YouTube. The story revolves around Simon, who really just wants to go home. But the virtual Stockholm he finds himself in seems anything but normal. Monsters and creatures are everywhere.

The game is clearly inspired by Silent Hill, but still creates its own dynamic and atmosphere. It is based on a mixture of survival horror and psychological horror, with limited resources and an enthralling story that is measured in places with large game series .And the best thing is that Cry of Fear is completely free to download on Steam. There's even a co-op campaign with new story content.

Conclusion

Horror games are one of their favorite genres for many, which are mainly supported by a large number of indie developers. There is a large selection of subgenres, all of which bring a different horror with them. Some rely on direct jumps care, while others prefer to create a dark atmosphere. Horror as a genre can also be found in many other games, for example Dark Souls, co-op games like Dead by Daylight or survival games like The Forest or Subnautica. Suspense and dark themes are something video games don't shy away from, and their interactivity only makes them more immersive.
